Medication for the Misinformed

Your species lives fast and hard. Sometimes it's easier to get instant gratification, or a quick mental band aid by popping a pill.

Creating and experimenting with chemicals and plants is a very valid science.

However, there's a problem with a lot of modern day scientific research: it's intellectual property. I can't blame them for this tact, because all this data and trials and red tape adds up to billions of dollars.

But who came first?

The drugs, or the psychological conditions?

Everyone gets down. Some people get infected with precepts, lose self esteem, and waste away in apathy. There's a lot of wiggle room in-between these polar opposites, and that grey area is filled with millions of anti-depressive medications.

Take away the medication, you in theory, bring back the depression.

Never take the medication, and you'll in time, get over the depression.

So...why take the medication to begin with?

Life is a balancing act.

Speaking of balances, some of you will harp on me and try and tell me bipolar disorder and depressive symptoms are real physical issues.

And I'll politely pat you on your head and send you back to school.

No, no.  Read  me out.

Perceived chemical imbalances or not, there's no such thing as a psychological disorder as a lifestyle. Unless, of course, you decide to give that power to your problem.

ADD, Bipolar, Depression, Mania, so much came be called phoney.

So, making medication for such issues is a bit suspect.

Now, I'm not going to sit here and tell you to dump out your pills. Keep in mind, I'm just a time traveling alien.

But I've personally dealt with many of the issues described above, and have overcome them all. I'm no super hero, and it's nothing to do with my alien physics.

It has everything to do with my attitude.

You CAN be happy, you ARE a great person, I BELIEVE in YOU!

...but if what you have going on for you in medication regiment is working, keep on keepin' on. Just don't feel you have to be dependent on them forever.

The Real Dangers of Depression Drugs

Right now, hundreds of lawsuits are being filed by pharmaceutical companies everywhere. Logic dictates some of them to be false, but logic also dictates that some of them are real.

I have had adverse reactions to a number of perscription drugs, psychologically and physically. This is why I tend to stay out of anything looking like a funny farm or psych ward; they're no good for me. They help me not. They hurt me lots.

This is why, I always keep my attitudes in check. It took me a long while to master this skill, and there was some pain along the way. But being independent from medication is a nice reward. Besides, I hate when I beta test products. They always crash!

He Needed Hugs, Not Psych Drugs

I'm never going to side with anyone in this debate. I look at cause and affect, and all the actions either made or never attempted.

This gentleman was angry, hurt, lonely, depressed beyond recognition. I've been there, many of us have. But what he needed most was not a regimen of medication and therapy sessions, he needed a social structure that harbored love and affection.

Columbine is another proverbial hatefest, I've been there too. After all the therapy sessions, the drugs, everyone felt they had tried their best. Well, no, they didn't.

No one listened. No one acted. They all wanted these kids out of their sight and fixed.

LSD, CIA, and the French

Drugs have been used as tools for mental well being, psychological weapons, war-time enhancements, and party fun.

Misuse, ignorance, and intolerance have caused undue harm on your species as a whole.

Remember to know yourself, your mind, and your body.

And remember, there's always more than one answer to a problem.

Often, the best one can sometimes take a lot of work. But in my opinion, it's well worth it.

I can't tell you why you should or shouldn't decide to take any drug, be it medication, spiritual, or recreational.

I can tell you, however, that it's a personal choice. It's one that should not be made lightly.

I will also tell you medicating children and young adults while practical and many agree medically safe, it's probably not a very healthy idea on the psychology of the child in the long term.

This is why most of these drugs are ill-advised to be used during pregnancy for women.

After all, a drug called Paxil that was released in 1983 didn't warrant enough attention for it's alarming rate of suicides dealing with coming down from it.

Sadly, while drugs are respectfully used in many instances, and even culturally used--caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, cocaine, hash, peyote--not enough thought, I believe, is given to the lasting impact on both the human condition and the society it dwells in.

In due time, I'll reveal more of my own personal observations. I'll try to remain objective. My only real agenda, ever , is to create discourse. I've shared with you some opinion, some fact, and some wholesale truths.

Believe what you may, understand what you may not, and never let anyone or anything hold power over you.

It's time you stop tip toeing around such a serious social issue.

Until our next intersection in space-time,

Namaste!

I've told my parents NO persciptions at a young age they agreed and I slowly learned to adjust my lifestyle to obtain a regular sleep pattern which was all that was needed...to simply be aware I had a conditon of hyper active dissasociative disorder was an enabling effect to just let these feeling hit me head on using positive distraction techniques to counter the negative ones;D!!

Glad to hear of your mastery over your disorder, acer!

Congrats!

Great information here. Popping happy pills may make you even more sad. I see the same thing with the daily bombarding of ED commercial. Just pop a Viagra, Cialis or the other one, and your problems disappear like magic.

Hey FGual! Thanks for stopping by! You're so right about that--too! Haha, it makes life all better. It's not because you're a lousy lover, it's because you/them can't get it up. ;)

In all seriousness, there's a lot of alternative ways to "get it up," but I just don't see the need to research this in my youth. ;)

Ixxy: It caught my attention that you healed yourself of conditions that often require medications which in turn cause side affects. Would love to read more about it! I stay away from medications, unless absolutely necessary which is hardly ever. Great information, thanks for sharing!

Hi Violet, I'll be more happy to elaborate in the future. :)

I find medicating with prescription drugs to usually come with a long list of side affects, like you mention. I usually use some of the methods I described above. My favorite is meditation, actually, with writing being a close second.

Will definitely write about it soon! :)

Thanks, I am very interested! I found that as I wrote a poem yesterday, an emotional issue I was dealing with, left me, so I am thinking of taking up writing poetry again, even if some may be for my eyes only. :)

As long as the pharma industry has the power to manipulate the people and as long as they can make big money with their useless pills, nothing will change. Let's replace manipulation by education, your hub is a small step in the right direction, thank you!

Hi jupiter!

I agree--education, love, and discourse. Your species will be freed from non-issues in no time! ;)

I cat on Prozac gets to me. All the side effects are enough to keep me away from any medication. Great hub.

Well, what to do now that I've been on them 18yrs....

Hi, it was Dr. peter breggin. a really good psychiatrist against pills!!

I need to know more, we all do,huh? The pills do make billions so we know they are overly encouraged esp for little kids (like ritalin)...I've heard that drug really harms children-they are too little for toxic drugs.

Prayer helps me and writing. Take care :)

humnn, food for thought. Presented well... but have also seen medication give schizophrenic affecive disorder folk back their lives, and help bipolars level... interesting though.

Hey meow!

I can't disagree; I'm not a practicing doctor on earth or any planet. However, I've personally dealt with A Day Day and BiPolar. I've had dark bipolar days. Kicking the pills that were supposed to treat both issues is what ultimately saved me.

But, that's just me. My neurochemistry is alien, after all. ;)

As for schizophrenics, yes, that's a difficult disease to get over..if not impossible to, treatment of course at that point would be medical and/or genetic. But we're skipping ahead...

If I were to dilute this down to two points it would be:

1. Love yourself.

2. Watch how you medicate. ;)
