Just the Other Day...

A fellow named qwark asked a question on the forums--roughly translated, it asks "is consciousness man's natural enemy?"

Well, that's a hefty question. Since he may be unaware of the consciousness through out most life (well, all of it really--just at varying levels) he seemingly assumes we're the only ones with the ability to destroy ourselves or save the planet. Well, lucky for him you're not in a time line whereupon Charlton Heston finds himself screaming on a beach as he looks at what used to be the Statue of Liberty.

Still, maybe an aperising would knock your species down a peg or two in the ego department.

At any rate, he's a negative nancy (but I do endorse his stuff, check him out!). He believes that humanity will never work together in such harmonious ways as to afford your species survival in a galactic sense.

I can understand his fear. Greed is rampant, one only need look at Greece or Wall Street to see this.

But guess what? There's several technologies in the pipeline that are the first steps towards redefining your whole culture and species. Within a generation or two brick and mortar stores will become increasingly obsolescent,  save for the odd electronic store. But those, too, will soon be gone.

How is this possible? Well, that's just one surprise I've in store for you.

The future is yours, and what you make of yours indirectly affects all around you.

So here's a few things I've picked up to restock my lair (when I get the new one built). I still have yet to pick up a new atom smasher, so if you know anyone trying to get rid of an obsolete model don't forget to mention me!

MakerBot

"Gutenberg Press of 3D Printing"

That's right. You can now create your own little goodies at home and have them printed out in different materials. They want to bring manufacturing to the little guy--even at home!

And just like the Altair, or the first personal computer from Apple, Inc., these guys sell you kits to customize your printer. All assembly required!

But it's not too long before this sort of technology shows up in homes, where if you'd like to get a new plate set--or perhaps glassware--all you'd have to do is buy the material to print with and either software or schematics to create said product.

Think about it...you're selling physical goods compressed into a file that tells a 3D printer how to create something layer by layer, until it's a solid and often usable product.

Granted this technology is "new" and "cutting edge" in your time line now, but you won't believe the impact it will have if adoption spreads.

There's printers that create food, and as I said before--even electronics will become printable at home.

Imagine open source diagrams and schematics of products where engineers the world over could improve a product in the click of a mouse or tap of a wacom. Sound groovy?

Then get crackin'.

Why is this here? Well, why not?
Why is this here? Well, why not?

There's actually so much good coming out of your species right now I'm not sure how anyone can be cynical. I don't even know where to begin, but the MakerBot is a fun toy besides a game changing device.

Geeks and hackers have always moved your species forward in times of peace, besides in times of war. Without them--you'd miss out on electricity, the Model T, and all of the good stuff.

But I digress. Let's continue this in a more logical progression.

Our pal qwark fears over population...so will we be facing a greener future, or a soylent green meal bar?

Lets look at some ecology issues. First up, energy!

"'sup dude. What's this bag hanging off the side of me? Oh, I got a second job generating electricity for the power company. Enzymes break down oxygen and glucose in my body, and store it in these tiny discs."

That's right. All those cybernetic parts that you can be looking forward to just may now have a viable power source, instead of hooking up a nuclear reactor to yourself!

...or having one built into your motorcycle's side-car.

So NASA kinda wants to go to Mars, but there's only so long an optimal window to blast off and make it during the period it's closest to our orbit.

But even if your species manages to land, communication is going to only be one-way and take twenty minutes each trip.

Now you're thinking "OH GOD! We'll never have interplanetary communication!"

Don't worry, you're already getting it down.

Quantum teleportation has recently been achieved over a distance of some sixteen kilometres. Now this doesn't mean they created a half-man half-fly beast, but what it does mean is they've affected two atoms far apart. Einstein would call this "spooky action at a distance," but what it means for you is near-instant communication over however long a stretch of starscape divides you and your loved ones.

Speaking of space travel, those crazy Japanese are up to their robotic hi-jinx again. Yeah, they're gonna send some robots to the moon--and even build a moon base! For..err, robots.

That'll make it easier to create an infrastructure within the solar system, and I'm sure lead to eventual applications for extra planetary mining missions.

Low on water you say? No problem--plenty of comets around! And check out the ice cap on Mars. Europa has running water, too!

And Speaking of Water...

..water's one of those resources that some say we peaked years ago, not noticing. Kinda like oil (which may actually be a biological process, and hence a renewable resource.) it needs to be conserved and converted to clean usable stuff.

So how does one do this? How about a hydro-electric desalination plant? It's going into the Gulf of Mexico--oil spill permitting.

Oh, and as far as that oil thing being renewable--scientific data permitting, there's at least a company out there creating technologies to make even wood into a "high value liquid," so..maybe black gold WILL grow on trees!

So, what do you think? Does this smattering of technology heading your way make your head spin? Do you still feel as if humanity is heading into Armageddon?

Or do you believe you're finally heading towards a path of self-sustainability and a brighter, greener future?

And on we row,

We're struggling against a sea of sorrow.

An ocean of tears -
We weep for our lives

Day by day, trying to move
Against the grain - a balance so fragile
Empowered only by ourselves

We find the strength,
We possess the passion!

Come with me: take my hand!
Is this life, but a hollow sham?
Full of sound and such fury,
Yet signifying... nothing!

In such desperation,

Something says look inside.

The power compels you!

The power compels you!
The power within!

Now realized, the notion is alive,

Preach the end or a new beginning?

Empowered only by ourselves,
We have the strength,
We possess the passion!

Search for truth through a system of deceit;
In a world of lies;
A hollow lie!

Yes and none of these things were said or mentioned in the Bible. Why? Because they wouldn't know how to explain it way back then even if they tried.

I heard of a machine that can take our sewage and make it into pure clean drinking water.

Those who spread FEAR and DEAT, well that is what they will get and they are very blind. Do they have some sort of guilt complex---hell yes! Just because they are giving up doesn't mean the rest of us who have brains should.

Great hub, as always and I rated it up and useful.

Thanks Lady G, I agree one hundred percent. There's always a negative and positive swell in a social climate--the more positive, the better the writhing masses communicate.

I truly appreciate your kind remarks! All the best to you.

I'm coining a new phrase today:

lxxypunk: the use of metal and technology to find a future of peace

You keep me up-to-date on the coolest new tech. Things I read about as a science-fiction-loving kid are now happening. It is a very exciting time to be alive!

And...I don't know how you find songs that can sound so dark on the surface and have such an uplifting message. I remember when I thought metal was mere noise and grunts, but you have opened my eyes to yet another strange and wonderful part of this world. :D

Love you K@ri--great new meme, we'll need to send it in to Wired and Twitter. ;)

The harsh electronic noise and deep growls of voice are an art, and conveying power through peace while sounding like the cookie monster is no easy task.

Hey Ixxy: I must confess, I'm something of a negative nancy, thinking the world is basically run by idiots who thwart change at every level (because it doesn't pay the oil companies, with their ridiculous wind farms: great for PR but they don't do much.) Dean Kamen, inventor of the segway (seemingly frivolous but his money has to come from somewhere) also invented a new kind of wheelchair that literally makes the users weep with joy over what they can do, but more importantly, he has invented a small device that can turn any water, no matter how fouled, into potable. He demonstrated on the Colbert Report. Colbert treated him like a quack and made fun of the whole thing. And that is what I'm talking about. I am angry at that kind of attitude. This guy deserves to be taken seriously.

Many, many years ago, Kurt Weill wrote a song lyric that goes: "Mankind will survive...Thanks to it's brilliant." I hope that's true.

lxxy Hub Author 23 months ago

Christoph,

I understand your plight. Look at the great genius of Tesla! His stuff was taken by the military, never to be seen.

There's definitely an uphill battle but I believe that anarchy will slowly encroach upon the masses--or perhaps, some sort of decentralized open source democracy.

I, like you, hope for the best.

"Terminally Optimistic," K@ri would say.

Religous nd other doom sayers just need to be sat down to watch the Science Channel, History and History International and also the Health Channels. They would learn lots of good things versus balming all il of humans on everyone and spreading FEAR and thinking that someothing is going to just take them off the earth. Now that is Sci-fi!

I agree. Humanity is on the precipice of a whole new paradigm. I don't actually like that word, because it's so cliche`..but that's the best way to put it.

Not sure about that quite yet acer, but I'll be going more into quantum technology later.

It's hard to pick through all the data I've collected, this only represents a small fraction. I've more still, and gaining more everyday.

And I agree Tom, children are always the future. ;)

Ixxy, I loved it!

Flattery will gain ya little with me tho...lol

You did make a very valid point. That point is, that given time, there is no "possibility" that can't be realized by we humans.

Epistemologically, man is not limited in anyway but "time!"

You are the "forever optimist." :-)

"WE" exist as the only life form on this planet that has the ability to destroy all extant life.

My question is, "will the anomaly 'consciousness' be his undoing?"

I ask that because "nature requires all life to adapt to her demands if survival is it's goal.

Man functions contrary to natural fiats,in too many facets of life,

All life but man, has natural enemies. Man is his only "natural enemy."

The earth requires balance for life to function successfully within its firmaments.

"our" population is not being controlled by a natural event. it is growing out of control and will, eventually require an action to reduce and control it.

The wonderful possibilities that you refer to Ixxy, can only be accomplished if man can overcome those facets of his "consciousness" that divide and fragment him.

His ability to come together as a synergistic unit, to work in concert with the goal of survival in mind, does not exist.

If he continues on this destructive path and infantile bigotry and ignorance increase as population grows, he will experience a massive diminution in numbers and a regression back to the stoneage.

All those wonderful possibilities we all dream of will vanish in a catastrophic moment.

Mother "Gaia" will not blink. She will heal herself and evolution will continue to experiment with surviving life.

Great hub, well organized and presented....just unrealistically optimistic :-)

Thanks for such an excellent response qwark. I was planning to start presenting this information before our little discourse began, and I will endeavour to make a believer out of you yet.

Children being our future and religion telling them we are all gonna die and go to some imaginary place and this world will be no more-----gee now we know why they are all druggies and killing each other. Oh and religious people (fundies) don't think they cause this. They blame it on Satan. Sorry off my soapbox now.

Loved the Hub Ixxy, and thanks for showing me all the improvements in technology!

As for my thoughts, I don't think that our future is necessarily going to be positive or negative. With whatever tools at our disposal, we can always use them in a way that is either destructive or constructive. Like nuclear power.

Functioning as we do, mankind will not be around long enuf to attain the high level of existence he is capable of producing.

Okay qwark, I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree. Won't stop me revealing some cool stuff. ;)

sandra rinck profile image

sandra rinck 23 months ago

I think I don't know. I can see galactic superstructures and teleporting in the future. The gadget is sorta cool.. you think it can make computers too?

I think that technology is awesome so don't get me wrong when I say this but while the rest of humanity is playing Star Trek and warping into the future, some of us (me) really want to live in Paradise, a Green Earth.

Not to say that I wouldn't want to take a trip to Jupiter or hitch a ride on an intergalactic asteroid fully stacked with beer and potato chips or have my own robot to do my dirty work etc...

Shit, I think it would be excellent and super cool to have different human species (we might get a long better that way lol) but at the same time, I would also like to have plain ole human babies too.

Anyways, I am rambling. I just get a little overwhelmed at times to where I feel like I might have a misfire in my synapse because the information being processed and the reality of these things that seemed so unreal starts to sink...

I have a question Ixxy. If the mind is a storage of information and we are able to connections with existing information thus building new information super highways in the brain... well. When the brain sees something that has never been processed before (hence they misfire)how does it build a connection to something that was never there?

Sometimes it makes me think that all the information that could ever be known is already there and that's why we aren't using very much of it at all but as time goes on and more and more information is being uncovered or rediscovered then it implies that we only know about 10 percent of what there is to actually know.

That is an unfathomable computation....

lxxy profile image

lxxy Hub Author 23 months ago

Hey Sandra! Feel free to ramble whenever you want, I do it all the time. Haven't you read my writing? ;)

Anyway, as far as the brain processing information--a lot of people say memory is quite like the computer in many ways. Memory occurs through three stages:

1. Registering an event, encoding it.

2. Storing it in long term memory.

3. Creating cursory links to it as a way of retrieve later.

These cursory links can be thoughts, similar experiences--smells, sights, sounds, feelings--you name it! Your brain has a structure that is much like the synaptic world wide web.

All information is stored in a compressed form and gets linked back utilizing the stuff I just mentioned.

Short term memory is far less capable, although with adequate training (like soldiers, for example) you can develop an automatic recall system that allows you to remember everything in a room.

Some people are born with the problem (or gifted, if you wish) with great long term memory with the ability to remember every detail down to the last minute instantly.

Others say "Everyone's born with a photographic memory, not everyone has enough film."

But like you, I can't help but wonder--is consciousness not in our minds at all?

Some people, like Jewels or perhaps even SEM Pro believe it's all above us, in this ethereal matrix if you will.

Which also explains remote viewing, something I love to practice as a hobby.

That makerbot thing is awesome.

Oh, and yeah, I think we'll survive in the sense that there's no impending doom anytime really soon, but of course we won't survive as a species forever. All species either go extinct or change into another animal over time.

I think fusion is a good technology, but one should not put all their energy needs into one basket. Also, at some point, and it may be soon....you'll have zero point energy generation, with the same benefits of fusion but no waste to store. =)

Have you noticed how many media stores have left?

All you have is food, clothing, etc. As these 3D printers gain ability, traction in the market place, we will rely more and more on these items to manufacture our goods rather than having to drive to a store or order one online.
